What you should know when shopping for custom rims.

When choosing rims for your car or truck it is important to prioritize the features that are important to you, appearance, performance or price.

If appearance is the most important factor, then the choice of custom rims is endless. Shopping online is where you will find the greatest selection of rims. Reputable rim dealers will be able to offer you wheel and tire packages for virtually every make and model of vehicle. Your rims will arrive at your door balanced and ready to go.

If you are looking to improve the performance of your vehicle, then more care needs to be taken when choosing custom rims. Heavy steel rims can dramatically reduce the performance and handling of a small car.

Alloy wheels are lighter and can have the added advantage of keeping brakes cooler, a consideration if you drive in an environment that is particularly tough on brakes, such has congested traffic and steep hills.

You can plus size your rim one or two sizes as long as the outer diameter of the tire remains the same. Larger rims can help your car respond quicker and hold the road better.

Keep in mind that the outer diameter of the tire should remain the same as indicated by the vehicle manufacturer, therefore a larger diameter rim will reduce the height of the sidewall, that is the distance from the rim to the outer diameter of the tire.  Short sidewalls or low profile tires are commonly seen on sports cars and high performance tires. Because the tread has a closer connection to the rim, handling is improved, especially noticeable when cornering.  A tall sidewall tire reduces noise and can make for a smoother ride. With more rubber between the tread and the rim, the tire can flex and help absorb road imperfections such as potholes.  To read more about the performance of tires visit CC Rims tire page.
